Kailua-Kona resident Michael W. Fox has died as a result of a single-vehicle crash Oct. 9 on Hinalani Street near Anini Street, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Responding to a 6:30 p.m. call, Kona police determined that a 2008 Adly moped was traveling on the right side of the lane heading east on Hinalani Street near Anini Street and passing a vehicle that was making a left turn onto Anini Street when it reportedly struck a rut in the road. The operator, Fox, was thrown from the moped, which eventually ending up on top of the lower portion of his body.

Fox, 64, was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m. Oct. 10, police said.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation. The exact cause of death is pending the autopsy report, police said.

This is the 10th fatality so far this year compared with 23 fatalities at this time in 2013.
